February 2022 Newsletter
Congrats to the Bride and Groom!
We’re so grateful to have seen no shortage of projects coming through the studio this month! In between painstakingly separating files for screen printing, color matching, and getting stationery projects out the door, owner and founder, Ingrid Schindall, has been putting final touches on her own wedding; set for this coming Tuesday, the 22nd! Naturally, Ingrid designed and printed her own stunning and playfully colorful Key Largo-inspired wedding suite - sure to make a splash on the Nocturnal Press Instagram and website very soon.
The IS Projects team wants to wish Ingrid and Johnny Zhang, IS Project’s go-to photographer and videographer extraordinaire, the best on this new exciting chapter of their lives. Johnny has been diligently working behind the scenes for years now, filming our virtual workshops and virtual gallery tours at the height of the pandemic, documenting Ingrid’s independent projects, and leveling up our website and marketing photos. Expect to see many more collaborations between these two over the coming years!
With that said, we will be closed Tuesday, February 22nd and Wednesday February 23rd and will resume normal hours the 24th. As our big move approaches, we cannot take on any more book or screenprinting projects until we get settled. We still have limited availability for letterpress projects and assisted studio time so be sure to reach out with those inquires as soon as possible.
It’s hard to believe we only have another month of classes at this address! Check out our class discount and offerings below.

Lexicon of Longing by Golnar Adili
On View Until March 1, 2022
Closing Reception: Feb 26th, 6-10pm
Lexicon of Longing is a solo exhibition of artists' books and prints by Golnar Adili which grapple with deconstructing and reconstructing past traumas. Born in Virginia to activist parents fighting against the shah, Adili’s family migrated to Iran in the wake of the revolution. Growing up in post-1979 Tehran, in the face of seismic geopolitical shifts, Adili experienced uprooting and disconnection. Only two years after their resettlement in Iran, Iraq’s sudden attack on Iran tightened the Islamic Republic’s grip on any political opposition, catalyzing Adili’s father’s eventual escape back to the United States. Adili’s father was never able to return. This separation split Adili’s family for many years, ending only when she moved to the states to attend college. In her work, Adili is compelled to decode the ways in which these events have marked her.
As a visual thinker, Adili is interested in learning through comparison; making connections between similar shapes and events from varied contexts as the foundation upon which she builds her vast internal library of the world. Inspired by how her own child observes and archives information, Adili has infused her practice with play, using family photographs and language to reshape memory, experiences of displacement and identity. Forgetting and relearning both English and Persian multiple times has made language a fascinating reference in Adili's work. Persian poetry, as well as biographical text investigating a landscape of longing, have provided a valuable context for examining language formally. These investigations include physically building words and letters with a multitude of materials. In doing so, Adili uses architecture, book arts, and installation to distort and blur the lines between design, craft, and fine art.
Golnar Adili is a mixed media artist, educator, and designer with a focus on diasporic identity. She holds a master's degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and has attended residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation for the Arts (Bellagio, Italy), Center for Book Arts (NYC), Smack Mellon (Brooklyn, NY), Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (MA), MacDowell Colony (NYC), Ucross Foundation for the Arts (Clearmont, WY), Lower East Side Printshop (NYC), Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace (NYC), among others. Adili has shown her work internationally; venues include: the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), NURTUREart (Brooklyn, NY), Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles, CA), and International Print Center New York (NYC). She has received several grants, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, NYFA Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Artists Books, and the Jerome Hill Finalist Grant. Adili is a Jameel Prize finalist. Her artist books are in several collections, including the Library of Congress, Rutgers University, Yale University, and University of Michigan.

We hope you all have been having a happy and healthy new year. We can hardly believe February is around the corner and thus, another month closer to the studio’s big move.
While we have nothing official to share yet, we are close to finalizing some details on our new home and will share the news just as soon as we’re able. What a year!
2021 has been a year of growth, challenges, and dreaming about a future where we can all get together and get inky again. We’ve worked on big projects, made new friends, stretched our curatorial muscles, spent more time on Zoom than we would have ever predicted, found our favorite brand of n95 masks, got some bad news, got some great news and slowly but surely are making a plan for a new home.

Re: Contextual by David Wolske
November 17, 2021 - January 3, 2022
Re: Contextual is a solo exhibition of relief letterpress prints by David Wolske combining contemporary and historical processes to transfigure letters, numbers, and punctuation into visual poetry. The abstractions use color and negative space to communicate the more emotional aspects of written language while inviting the viewers to create their own interpretations.
By deconstructing language to express a more visceral form of communication, Wolske's work playfully subverts the relationship between the hand and the machine. Viewers may be surprised to learn that the deceptively simple shapes they see in these enigmatic compositions are remixed letters and numbers. By abstracting the alphabet, Wolske transforms the ordinary, or even banal, into something new and unexpected.
David Wolske is a typo/graphic designer, artist, and educator. His interdisciplinary practice combines the traditions of letterpress and printmaking with digital tools and design thinking. Wolske’s work is exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. He is a 2020 LHM Educator Fellow at the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography at ArtCenter College of Design; the College Book Art Association 2018 Emerging Educator; 2016 Visiting Artist at Hatch Show Print; and a 2014 Utah Visual Arts Fellow. Wolske’s work is represented by Artspace111 in Fort Worth. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas.

IS Projects is looking for a new home!
After 7 wonderful years in the FATVillage Arts District, IS Projects is looking for a new home. We need to be out of our current space by May 31st 2022 in order to make way for a transformative development project.
We are very excited at the opportunity that this change brings for the studio and look forward to finding a space where artists and creatives can continue to expand their practice in printmaking and book arts while contributing to the evolution of the medium. We are open to lots of ideas and would love to partner with people and orgs that are passionate about the development of South Florida’s artists and arts landscape. If you have any suggestions, contacts or leads or if you own a big warehouse that you would like to fill up with a printmaking wonderland please reach out!
In the meantime, please consider doing your holiday shopping or taking a class at IS Projects to help support us as we get ready for this major (and expensive) change!
Wherever we end up, we promise to continue to bring high quality programming and prints to South Florida for years to come!

7 years of printmaking in paradise!
This Saturday’s Artwalk will mark 7 years of IS Projects being open to the public in the FATVillage Arts District in Fort Lauderdale, Florida! It started out as a dream to own a press and spend a lot of time talking to other people about how cool printmaking is while making prints and while it’s grown significantly, the core of the dream is still the same. We’ve gone from one Vandercook (shoutout CB) and about 400 pounds of type to a full scale fine art printmaking operation that can accommodate artists interested in practicing letterpress, etching, relief, book binding, paper making, screen printing, cyanotypes, and much more! We went from commission printing and weekend workshops only to a diverse list of offerings including a robust exhibition program, residencies, open studio hours, internships, private classes, assisted printing, and our latest addition: Fine Art Print and Artists’ Book Development Programs!

On View I Sept 20 - Nov 7, 2021
Opening Reception I Sat, Sept 25th 7-10PM
Virtual Artist talk I with ILSSA co-founders, Bridget Elmer and Emily Larned, Sat. Sept 25th at 6PM on @isprojectsfl Instagram
Bridget Elmer and Emily Larned originally founded Impractical Labor in Service of the Speculative Arts (ILSSA) in 2008 to find and connect with other impractical laborers—those interested in cultivating a considered, thoughtful, and balanced creative practice. They were looking for alternatives, interested in blurring disciplinary lines and searching for a community of makers who valued process over product. The impetus for that search was born from their friendship and the rare, immediate connection that they discovered when their paths crossed many moons ago. With MakerMatching, they are returning to that genesis and working together with IS Projects to create space for other paths in their orbits to cross with our community.

It’s been a busy summer and we couldn’t be more thankful for all of the support that’s been coming our way between a major museum exhibition, our first in person classes since 2020 and new residents! We’re happy to reintroduce in-person scheduled classes and present lots of new opportunities to get involved here at the studio and in the South Florida print/book/zine scene!

THE SUMMER SIZZLE!
When the studio first opened in 2014, we expected our summers to be pretty slow due to the seasonal nature of South Florida’s population. So we planned classes, events, and other fun projects to take place during the summer and year after year we find that the summer ends up being one of the most productive seasons at the studio. This year is no exception!
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it out to the reception for Into the Fold at Coral Springs Museum of Art last week. The amount of people who made the trek out to see the culmination of the past 6 years of our hard work with the Existent Books project meant the world. If you missed it, or can’t make it to Coral Springs be sure to check out our IG live curators’ conversation coming up on Thursday, August 5th at 6pm! Sammi and Ingrid will be discussing the exhibition and the project from the museum and studio so we’ll take you on a walk around the show and a tour around the shop tying together the books and the process.
We also want to say a big thank you to our first official Skills Exchange Resident Amanda Thackray who travelled all the way from New Jersey to make handmade paper using water from the Fort Lauderdale Beach and share her screen monoprinting skills in our first official in person classes!
We’re having a bit of a soft opening this month with scheduled classes on the calendar so if you are looking to get more involved at the studio, exploring all things print, paper and book, be sure to check out our new learn page for more info or continue reading below!

MEET THE NEW SELIKOFF POSTER
Antique Ornamented!
This poster features Antique Double Outline Half Ray and Half Solid Shade AKA Antique Ornamented, a popular face in the 1800s. Antique ornamented was first presented by William H Page in the 1849 catalogue. The bold design creates a sense that the letters are leaping out at you from the page so we designed a poster that celebrates the optimistic coming out that the summer of 2020 felt like. The specimen takes the form of a word search with sunny summer fun words that can be found throughout the poster.

Just You and Me by Mark Fleuridor
On View May 17 - July 6, 2021
Mark Fleuridor is a Haitian American artist born and raised in Miami, Florida. He graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Painting. Fleuridor explores his own personal history within his background and familial experiences. These topics are explored through mediums such as printmaking, painting, quilting and collage. Fleuridor has completed artist residencies such as Vermont Studio Center (VT), the Oxbow Artist Residency (MI) and is currently attending Oolite Artist Residency in Miami, FL. Fleuridor is a recipient of the Oolite Arts Ellies Awards 2020 for his project Being Held and Beach Day, a project that created public murals in Miami that focused on families and their love for each other.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Just you and Me portrays relationships between the artist and his loved ones. Using patterns, printmaking, and quilting, Fleuridor explores memories of endless summers while growing up in Miami, Florida. Inspired by key moments in his life, these works depict a quiet, steaming environment where Fleuridor spent most of his time with his siblings.
The IS Projects gallery is open for appointments and has its lights on 24 hours so that the public can safely view the show through our big, storefront windows.

TUNE IN FOR THE ARTIST TALK
Join us Saturday, April 24th at 6pm for an artist talk on Instagram live with Jennifer D Printz for a closer look at her solo show, Time, No Longer Emptied of Presence.
The exhibition is on view through May 2nd with a
Virtual Gallery Tour & Gallery Shop available on our website!
Time, No Longer Emptied of Presence uses textiles as a means of reflecting on the invisible architecture of life and the ever-changing universe. The many threads woven together to create fabric represent the connections around us, our relationship with the planet, and the impact of time and space on each individual. Jennifer Printz uses fabric’s pliable nature to present the fluid tendencies of reality. The captured moment of the photograph is printed onto cotton and silks which are then manipulated into three-dimensional forms. The sky folds and twists as it is loosely stitched together into a tenuous shape that may unravel before our eyes, such as the ebb and flow of life.
This series materializes air, expanding and contracting it in space while clouds defy gravity. As the sky spills across the wall or onto the floor, one moment is stitched to another, emphasizing the collection of days that make up a life and the ongoing process of time. This work is also an homage to Printz's past, the time she spent as a child learning to sew with her great-aunt, and the many hours spent at her grandmother's Singer. It allows Printz to travel in time, joining the past with the future, using the skills she learned as a child to now expand her studio practice.
Jennifer Printz graduated with a BFA from East Tennessee State University and then completed her Masters of Fine Art in 2001 from The University of Georgia. Since graduation, her creations have been exhibited widely across the US and abroad including recent exhibitions at the Spartanburg Museum of Art, Chroma Gallery, and International Biennale of Prints in Portugal. She has participated in regular residencies in the US, her work is included in a large number of institutional and private collections and has been included in publications as diverse as Tricycle and the Carolina Review.
The IS Projects gallery is open for appointments Thursday evenings, 5-7pm and has its lights on 24 hours so that the public can safely view the show through our big, storefront windows.

DECEMBER 2020 Newsletter
As this year comes to a close, we reflect on all the ways 2020 has made us even closer to our community.
This is the last newsletter of 2020 and the first thing I want you to read as a subscriber and supporter of IS Projects is Thank you! Without the support of our incredible community we would not have made it through this year so thank you, thank you and one more time thank you!
In challenging times, those who succeed are those who adapt. As a shop that is still using 100 year old technology, adaptation to changing times might not seem like a natural strength of ours but with the help of our incredible staff and community and the video skills of one very talented and enthusiastic supporter, Johnny Zhang, we have been able to pivot a significant portion of our programming online this year. While we miss seeing everyone in person terribly, this shove into virtual programming has enabled us to reach audiences outside our South Florida habitat, keep up with good friends who have moved away, launch a blog, and create a valuable interactive archive of our exhibitions. These additions seem like no-brainers looking back on it now but without that big push in March to come up with ways to stay connected, who knows when that would have come up on the docket. Even as we are able to move into more in person programming, we plan to keep lots of our virtual programming active.
This year has been a challenge but we’ve managed to find some wins along the way. Click through the images to the right to see some of the things we were proud to make happen in 2020.
I hope that you are taking the last few days of the year to reflect on the positive changes, however uncomfortable their impetus may have been, and to set yourself up for a brighter 2021! We’ll be here, staying safe while making the upgrades that we can until we can have you back in the studio slinging ink and making prints!

WATER DRAWS ITSELF
INGRID SCHINDALL
Water Draws Itself is on view thru JAN 3
Check out the Virtual Gallery Tour & Gallery Shop
*Contact us to schedule a viewing!*
Water Draws Itself is a solo exhibition by Ingrid Schindall that uses the process of papermaking to document her surroundings. Specifically interested in moving her practice of artmaking from the studio to the outside world, Schindall recognizes and encourages her environment as a collaborator. In the search to find ways to let water draw itself, different colored paper pulps were prepared for a trip to the beach. Mixed with ocean water, placed into a mold then released onto the damp sand, the swirling slurry settled quickly as the water escaped below ground and the pulp remained on the sand.
The resulting pieces of paper that formed, delicate to the touch and alien in the landscape, document the history of the water’s path. Each sheet reflects the surface of the water covering the planet in miniature. Sitting on the sand, wrestling with plastic sheeting and buckets of pulp, Schindall is reminded that there are easier ways to produce a portrait of the surface of the ocean but this paper holds not only the image of the ocean but also the smell, salt, and sand that are inseparable from the identity of this shoreline. Each piece is a portrait of this strip of beach. The irregularities are a reminder that you never see the same wave twice.
Ingrid Schindall is a passionate and productive printmaker and book artist based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is almost always found standing next to a press at the fine art printmaking studio she founded called IS Projects. She has a methodical yet curious and experimental studio practice. Her prints and artist books have been exhibited internationally and nationally. She is devoted to her writing practice and has produced six limited edition books, all written, designed, hand printed and bound by the artist.

In God We Trust: Early Bible Printings and Founding Documents from the David M. Rubenstein Americana Collection is an extraordinary exhibition of historic American Bibles and religious texts, many of which have rarely been displayed.
The exhibition features 18 books from the Americana Collection of Mr. Rubenstein, a prominent American businessman and philanthropist. Organized by the New-York Historical Society in collaboration with Mr. Rubenstein’s library consultant, In God We Trust presents the stories of these books and the ingenuity and diversity of the early Americans who made them.
The exhibition includes displays about letterpress printing and the art of bookmaking created by IS Projects. The displays include all of the tools and equipment that are used (and would have been used) to create books like the ones displayed in the exhibition. This year we were also very happy to be able to create a short film directed by Johnny Zhang that shows the process of creating a leather bound book to accompany the exhibition.

Add a presidential election into the mix and November sure does feel like a whole year jam packed into one month. Speaking of, we’ve still got some VOTE posters available for pick up if interested.
We look forward to celebrating Small Business Saturday with you at our first ever Sidewalk Sale and have outlined an IS Projects Holiday Gift Guide below for those interested in giving hand-crafted goods this holiday season - Check it out!

EXHIBITION PREVIEW & ARTIST TALK, THURS. 11/19 @ 6PM

Repeater is a solo exhibition by Amber Tutwiler that uses oil paint and mixed media on panel to describe the shifting tensions between knowing and forgetting. In this series, shapes of fabric and gestures of the hand emerge as amnesiac snippets of memory that vacillate between surface planes. Like an echo of a body and a place pulled outward from their origin, fragments of images repeat, scatter, and intersect. The handling of paint and the treatment of surface simulates printed photographs that have been redacted, collaged, and transposed. This trompe l’oeil preserves some element of intimate familiarity - even if the security of the recognizable is fleeting. Just as the folds of fabric rhythmically dance through each frame, the titles of each work, when read from left to right, act as poetic substrates to the body of work as a whole.
Amber Tutwiler is an artist from South Florida whose hybrid practice expands on figurative oil painting to describe our relationship to digital spaces. She attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design for Painting, received her BA in Psychology from Florida Atlantic University, and received her MFA in Visual Art from Florida Atlantic University (2017). In 2018, she had her first solo exhibition, Interface, and collaborated with Ballet Florida in an immersive performance, Welcome, at Fritz Gallery in West Palm Beach, FL. In 2019, Ballet Florida and Tutwiler collaborated again with PULSE, which debuted in March 2019 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. She has won various awards, including the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship in 2019, which resulted in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. Most recently, she was a resident at IS Projects where she experimented with CMYK lithograph prints. She just relocated to Vineyard, Utah, where she is currently a Lecturer at Utah Valley University.

We’re so grateful to be collaborating with The Society of the Four Arts for a second time on an extraordinary exhibition of books coming this Fall!
ON EXHIBIT
November 14, 2020 – January 17, 2021
January 30, 2020 – February 28, 2021

SEPTEMBER 2020 Newsletter
As we celebrate our sixth anniversary, we announce two exciting new Existent Book launches, a new exhibition in the gallery, blog post and series of virtual workshops.
6 years and we’re still here!
“September 27th is the 6 year anniversary of the opening of IS Projects. When I signed the lease on an 860 square foot back room in FATVillage I couldn’t imagine how to make the dream happen but also couldn’t picture not trying. Throughout the years it grew from a few presses and myself to an incredible fully equipped space with a fantastic team of 6 tenacious print lovers. Each year we took on new projects and cultivated an incredible community that showed us that we’re not the only ones who can geek out hard on print, paper and ink. Then we hit this year we’re in this odd place that feels so far away from what the dream had begun to develop into. At the beginning of 2020, we were in a position to truly blast off and make the dream into the reality. Now, we’re holding on the best we can with the support of our amazing community. It’s not been easy but we’re trying to keep ourselves busy and bring new and inspiring projects of our own to fruition while our commissioned projects have taken a downturn. We’ve created new virtual means of connection with our community and I couldn’t be more proud of the grit and determination that the team has shown through it all. Their support and your support has made it possible to hold on in the face of uncertainty. I hope that you all are well and I promise to have the biggest blow out print party South Florida has ever seen for our 7th year! Until then, stay safe and, if you can, consider supporting us through this tough time. We have a bunch of great merch in the shop that would love to join your home!
Thank you for your help in making the dream come to life!
Sincerely, Ingrid”

It’s heating up in South Florida these days and the the presses are getting lots of inky action. We’ve been fortunate to have some really exceptional talent come through the studio lately.
It’s heating up in South Florida these days and the the presses are getting lots of inky action. We’ve been fortunate to have some really exceptional talent come through the studio lately. Most notably, our Existent Books resident artists, Onajide Shabaka and Michelle A. M. Miller. Onajide and Michelle took over our new upstairs studio space and both had fruitful residencies exploring the possibilities of screen printing, letterpress printing and new book structures. We’re so excited to move ahead in production other their books and share more images and pre-order options as soon as possible.

Copy of the Original is Rachel Livedalen's solo exhibition featuring a series of works on panel that combine screen printed layers of Greco-Roman textbook pages with airbrush and gouache painting. Structured information depicted in these works relate to the construction and continuation of the art history canon and the way in which we understand visual culture. Textual information is stretched, morphed, or veiled, then layered with different modes of visual information like coded symbols, colorful shapes, or erased gestures. The exhibition questions our understanding of visual information both from academic art history and popular culture as it relates to beauty, feminine representation, and artifice. Specifically, the exhibition analyzes the Knidian Aphrodite, the first sculpture of a female nude in Greek art that now only exists as a Roman copy. This canonical work from western art history thus embodies ideas of representation and reproduction throughout history.
